Worms are bad this year and apparently there are all types of issues they cause for the sheep. What’s in the toolbox? Well the toollbox has been emptied out and now it is in buckets.
After a very bad three week run of worms or another type of parasite in the lambs that are weaned, I have lots of stuff I have given the sheep to try and keep them alive.
First and for most wormer, three types, ivomectin, cydectin, and prohibit with safeguard. One of my favorite things to keep is ensure. It is amazing what you can do with ensure. It helps keep sheep hydrated, gives them vitamins, and during show stress will help keep the sheep together. I have found the power punch helps as a liquid B12.
Drench gun is very important as well as disposable syringes. I have recently found that the vitamin AD&E in the tube helps to keep the animals healthy through the hot summer. I have also been using electrolytes in the sheep water to also help get through the hot Texas summer. This is some of my things in my bucket and out of the toolbox.

This is where it all started. This ewe is still with us as a very pillar of the flock. This is from 2017 and since then she has created a few sheep that have helped out the program.
She created a buck lamb which helped to produce some nice ewes for the program and now she has a very nice ewe on her. This is her as an old lady - she is confirmed to be bred again due in September.
She has a unique story behind her because when she was only a few weeks old her mother died. When her mother died she would not take a bottle so she was an orphan who didn’t grow very well. It did take until she was about three for her to flourish but she did. Each of our sheep usually have at least one story I can tell about them.

This is the buck used for most all the white babies that were born this year. I got him last June when he was only 5 months old. Since then I have had 22 lambs out of him. He has done a fantastic job of putting length on the babies.
He has always had a gentle demeanor and he is easy to handle most of the time. He has grown out well and he has helped produce ewe lambs that will be kept back to improve my program.
He is separated from the ewes right now and doesn’t have the best attitude. He will be put back with the ewes October 1.
Stay tuned to see how his females we have kept back grow out.
